Chatham Cup result belies good performance

Eastbourne went to Wainuiomata  for the first round of the knockout Chatham Cup. Our opponents play in Capital 1 and in their day, were a strong Central League club. Eastbourne seniors play in Capital 5, so there was expected to be a difference in standards, but cup games always bring out upsets.

We expected to be close to them right till the end, but on this day it wasn’t to be. EE in fact had the first good scoring chance of the game in the 3rd minute after some great inter-passing, but Wainui finally broke the 0-0 deadlock after 20 minutes through some sloppy EE defence. The second goal shortly after was once again the result of defensive mis-communication and by half-time, Wainui were up 4-0. However, EE created some great chances of their own in that half and could easily have had 2-3 goals.

In the second half, Wainui upped the pressure to ensure there was no EE comeback, to eventually run out 7-0 winners. Despite the scoreline, it was by no means a one sided game and could have easily been 5-3. We were very happy the way this young EE team fought right to the end and never gave up and it was only Wainui’s stronger physical presence and off the ball running that was the difference between the 2 teams. A special mention to ‘young’ Geoff Morphew in goal who pulled of some terrific saves.
