In memoriam: two legends…

It is with great sadness that we are to acknowledge the recent passing of two of our Life Members: Ron Weatherhead & Bill Tait, both legends of Eastbourne Football Club. We wish to pass on our condolences to both of their families.

Bill Pllu has advised me that Ron Weatherhead, one of our Life Members and founding members of our Club has passed away (at the ripe old age of 92). Ron died a couple of last week. Ron was one of the three founding members who the ‘WWW’ cup was named after.

Ron lived with his wife, Ena, in Days Bay. I remember Ron and Ena pitching up to our 50th Anniversary a couple of years ago and Ron cutting the 50th anniversary cake. Ron’s daughter, Liz Pllu, and his son, Nick Weatherhead (who also played for the club and were exceptional players) were also at the 50th Anniversary in 2018.

It is the aim of the club to erect a small trophy cabinet in the ESSC club rooms to treasure and display our WWW Cup and recently awarded cups to show our appreciation for the achievements of our players both old and new.

Newsletter (Feb 2015)

Welcome to the first newsletter of the Eastbourne Football Club for 2015.

While it’s still summer the Management Committee have been busy in the offseason getting preparations underway for what will hopefully be another enjoyable and successful football season for both players and supporters.

One of our goals this year is to improve our communication with all members. This newsletter, together with the launch of our Eastbourne FC Facebook page (please like us) and a pre-season parents’ information meeting (more details to come) are all new initiatives which we hope you will find useful and a way to connect further with the Club. As always we’d love to hear your feedback.

This newsletter contains important information on our 2015 registration process as well as a new exciting pre-season football development programme for those interested.

2015 Junior & Senior Football Season & Registration Details

Online registration for all Junior football teams for the 2015 will open on Saturday 21st February and end on Monday 2nd March on the Registrations page of this website. We will send out a reminder to all past members via email and our Facebook page closer to the opening date but in the meantime we would appreciate if you could please spread the word to all prospective new members.

Junior Football

Registration fees (which include a team photograph, socks and membership to the Eastbourne Sports & Services club) are as follows:

  • First Kicks (4-6 years of age) – $85 (registration fee also includes a ball)
  • Fun Football (7th and 8th grades) – $95
  • Mini Football (9th to 12th grades) – $110
  • Youth Football (13th and 14th grade) – $120

There is a $10 discount for each additional child registered per family.

If you are unsure which grade your child will play in, the grade is based on the age that they turn this year (i.e. if your child has turned or will turn 8 this year they will play in 8th grade). Girls have the option of playing one grade below their age if they wish.

At Youth Football ages a number of players play for their schools rather than the Club they have grown up with. As a result the Eastbourne Football Club like many other clubs is often unable to field an ‘Eastbourne’ team. We have however over past seasons worked with other local clubs (Stop Out and Petone) who are in a similar position and will look to do this again in 2015 depending on registration numbers.

The season for all Junior teams will kick-off on Saturday 18th April and will conclude on Saturday 29th August. As ANZAC Day falls on Saturday 25th April all games on this weekend will be played on Monday 27th April.

Senior Football

Registration fees for all Senior teams are as follows:

  • Seniors and Masters – $250
  • Seniors (University Students) – $180
  • Seniors (School Students) – $130

The start of the season for Senior football is Friday 3rd April (Good Friday) and will conclude on Saturday 29th August.

Junior Football Development Sessions

The Club is pleased to announce that we have organised for an experienced, professional coach called James Prosser to provide some pre-season football development sessions locally here in Eastbourne. James has an extensive CV in football most recently at the Ole Football Academy where he has been Director of Player Development.

The pre-season sessions would be run for the month of March for players from Fun Football upwards. Each session would be a maximum of 12 players and last between 75-90 minutes. The cost for the month (4 sessions) would be $45 per player.

Places are limited for these sessions so please let us know as soon as possible if your child would like to attend by replying to If these sessions prove popular we will also look to offer further sessions throughout the season including holiday programmes and potentially summer training sessions, details of which will be posted up on our website.

Wellington Phoenix at the Hutt Recreation Ground

A reminder the Wellington Phoenix will be playing 3 games ‘in our backyard’ at the Brendon Foot Supersite Hutt Rec over February and March with tickets at reasonable prices and available from The Phoenix are fantastic supporters of football in Wellington and it would be great to ‘pack out the Rec’ to show our support. The three games are:

  • Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne City, Saturday 14 February, kick off 5pm
  • Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets, Sunday 22 February, kick off 5pm
  • Wellington Phoenix vs Adelaide United, Saturday 7 March, kick off 7pm

Café Reka at the Dowse is looking to create a carnival atmosphere before each game with their sun-soaked deck overlooking the Dowse Square and only a 1 minute walk from the park. They’ll be having specials including 4 x Heinekens for $20, fries & a Heineken for $10.

If you’re unable to make it to the games, the next best thing is to watch them live on a big screen and it just so happens Club sponsor Brew’D will be showing all three games live on theirs for your viewing pleasure.

Is your Football team the Champion bowls team of Eastbourne?

The Eastbourne Bowling Club is accepting entries from sports clubs/teams who can put together 3 person teams for a social bowls event. The event could be a pre-season event to get the players together in a team building exercise or an opportunity for the parents of the soccer juniors to participate with their children in this fun community event.

This social event is ideal for social bowlers or people who have never bowled before who want to get together with 3 or more of their club members, family or neighbours to put in a Street/Club/Group team to enter this social bowls event to find the champion social bowls Street team in Eastbourne. You have a choice of qualifying days being Sunday February 22nd from 1pm – 5.30pm or Sunday March 8th from 1pm – 5.30pm and you will play in a group of 4 teams playing 3 short games with the winner of each group going through to the finals day on Sunday March 22nd.
